George H. Wedgworth, Founder of Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative of Florida

Community members were saddened this week by the news of the passing of George H. Wedgworth, 88. Mr. Wedgworth was the founder of Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative of Florida.

Mr. Wedgworth moved to Florida from Starkville, Mississippi, at the age of two in 1930, with his parents Herman and Ruth Wedgworth.

Mr. Wedgworth received a degree in agricultural engineering in 1950 and returned to Belle Glade to work for the family business, Wedgworth Farms, where he nurtured and watched the cooperative grow into an international sugar powerhouse. He oversaw growth for Florida sugar cane for 54 years.

As President and Chief Executive Officer, the Coop found better methods of producing the cane crop as well as milling it.

Mr. Wedgworth was the focal point of the Florida sugar industry.

Visitation will be on Saturday, Nov. 19, from 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. at the Community United Methodist Church, 401 SW First Street in Belle Glade with the funeral service following at 10:30 a.m. A reception will follow the service in the Community United Methodist Fellowship Hall and graveside service at 3 p.m. at the Woodlawn Cemetery, 1301 S. Dixie Highway, West Palm Beach.
