Glades Day Gators celebrate senior night

BELLE GLADE – The Glades Day Gators celebrated senior night with a big 37-12 victory over West Oaks Academy of Orlando Friday, Oct 21.

The Gators fell behind early on an 88 yard kickoff return by Kayle McDonald to open by game but quickly rebounded to score 31 unanswered points before halftime to take control.

Quarterback Alex Mineo threw a 10 yard touchdown pass to Christian Ellison, Lorenzo Powe ran for a three yard score, Mineo hit AJ Johnson with an 18 yard touchdown pass, Markens Pierre ran for a two yard touchdown, and Rett Lohmann added a 29 yard field goal to give the Gators a 31-6 halftime lead.

The teams finished off the scoring in the third as Mineo scored on a one yard run for the Gators and Rajari Smith scored on a 66 yard run for West Oaks.

The Gators had good balance on offense with 181 yards rushing and 106 yards passing. West Oaks was able to gain 269 total yards. They fumbled the ball five times and had four turnovers. West Oaks also had 102 yards in penalties.

Pierre had 77 yards rushing and Cross Onega had 73 yards on the ground for Glades Day (5-3). Johnson had 54 yards and Ellison had 53 yards in receptions. Ellison added a 38 yard kick return. Ellison and Lohman both had interceptions.

This week the Gators have an opportunity for revenge as they tangle with the Coral Shores Hurricanes (6-3). The Hurricanes defeated the Gators earlier in the season in Tavernier, 13-12. Key players for Coral Shores include quarterback Juan Pablo Aborrezco, running backs Joshua Holper and Tanaris Walker and wide receivers Elijah Woods and Camren Carter. The school is located at 89901 Old Hwy, Tavernier. The kickoff Friday, Oct. 28, is scheduled for 7 p.m. Fans can expect to pay a charge for admission and parking.
