Tellus Products sustains environment and local economy

Tellus Products LLC is a new, Belle Glade-based company that manufactures packaging and food-service products using recycled fiber from the sugar milling process.
Aside from producing ecologically friendly products, the company brings additional economic activity to the Glades area.

“Siting our new company, Tellus, right here in Belle Glade was so natural for us, because this community has been the home of our parent companies, Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative and Florida Crystals, for nearly 60 years,” said Matthew Hoffman, president of Tellus Products.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott and other dignitaries were present earlier this year when the ribbon was cut to open the doors of Tellus Products, whose parent companies are Florida Crystals and the Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative.

Glades-grown sugarcane is a sustainable and bountiful crop used to develop the company’s products. The sugarcane provides the mills with the sucrose and molasses they make into food products. Water is needed for the process, and the fiber used to power the operations creates the eco-friendly Tellus products.

One of the sustainability elements in the process of developing the products comes through using an agricultural byproduct that does not displace the land used for growing food. Tellus also converts byproducts for high-end, environmentally friendly use.

For example, the sugarcane starts in the earth as it grows, then ultimately returns to the earth (minus its fruit, the sweet cane used to make sugar) as compost.

The products can compost within 90 days, in comparison with other products such as Styrofoam and plastics that can take thousands of years to decompose.

The new company’s single-use product lineup include plates and carryout trays.

Sharing the same values as its parent companies, the Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative Inc. and Florida Crystals Inc., Tellus is committed to providing high-quality jobs and great benefits to members of the community. Tellus has nearly 50 employees locally and created another 20 jobs.

“We look forward to continuing to grow our facility here in Belle Glade, which will benefit our local communities with even more jobs and economic activity,” Mr. Hoffman said.
“From the time we broke ground to the first products shipping out our doors, we’ve received so much support from our local elected officials, community leaders and residents that we’ve realized there’s truly no place like home,” he added.

Tellus is fortunate to have the ability to optimize on great local talent, sustain the environment and enrich the local economy. For more information about Tellus Products LLC, visit
