Babb honored as chamber’s Citizen of Year

PAHOKEE — Mayor Keith W. Babb Jr. was named the Pahokee Chamber of Commerce 2017-18 Citizen of the Year during the chamber’s Annual Awards Dinner on Friday, May 11, at the Palm Beach County Canal Point Community Center.

The chamber also recognized the following honorees: Deputy Steve Barge, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Deputy of the Year; James Edenhack, county Firefighter of the Year; C.R. Martin family, Pioneer Family of the Year; Celecia Gaynor, Business Person of the Year; and Angelica Reyes, City of Pahokee Employee of the Year.

Mr. Babb was elected mayor in March 2016 and has served for over 24 years as an elected city official. He is a magna cum laude graduate of Texas College. Mayor Babb was nominated and selected by Legacy South Florida Magazine as one of South Florida’s Most Powerful and Influential Black Professionals in Business and Industry for 2017. His community’s service includes being a founding charter member of the Belle Glades-Pahokee Alumni Chapter of Kapp Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.

Mayor Babb served 15 years on the board of directors of the Comprehensive AIDS Program and three years as board president. He also served 15 years on the board of the Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County Inc. Mayor Babb’s professional career spans over 38 years as the west county supervisor for the Palm Beach County Division of Senior Services.

This year, he was also nominated and selected for inclusion in SHE Holdings LLC’s 2018 Calendar and Resource Guide, Palm Beach County fourth edition. This calendar recognizes and honors 12 black men annually in Palm Beach County who are making a positive impact on their community.

In addition to a plaque, the mayor was presented with a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol in his honor by Dan Liftman, an aide to U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings. The Pahokee Chamber of Commerce congratulates Mayor Babb for his outstanding accomplishments and achievements.
