WEST PALM BEACH — Palm Beach County taxpayers have until Friday, Sept. 14, to challenge their property’s market value, assessed value, classification or exemption status by petitioning the county’s Value Adjustment Board (VAB).
Taxpayers have three options to file VAB petitions:
• Online at www.mypalmbeachclerk.com using myVAB;
• In person at the Clerk & Comptroller’s Governmental Center office or any branch location; or,
• By mail to 301 N. Olive Ave., Room 203, West Palm Beach, FL 33401
All petitions, whether submitted in person, online or by mail, must include a non-refundable $15 filing fee.
Hearings on petitions filed in 2018 will begin on Oct. 18.
Last year, property owners filed 5,348 petitions, down slightly from 5,380 petitions filed in 2016.
Roughly 30 percent of petitioners use the Clerk’s myVAB system to file their petitions electronically. The system gives petitioners real-time access to their petitions, and allows users to schedule hearings and submit supporting materials online.
Petition forms for those who choose not to use the online myVAB option are available from the Clerk’s office, the Property Appraiser’s Office or the Florida Department of Revenue’s website.
The Property Appraiser provides taxpayers with their property’s assessed and market values in a Truth in Millage (TRIM) notice that will be mailed to property owners on Aug. 20. The VAB, which consists of two county commissioners, one school board member and two citizen members, approves and hires special magistrates to settle any disputes between the property owner and Property Appraiser. It is an independent entity that is not affiliated with the Property Appraiser, Tax Collector or Clerk & Comptroller.
As Clerk to the VAB, the Clerk’s office receives and processes petitions, schedules and coordinates hearings, records the hearings and more.
