Deadline quickly approaching for Haitian Heritage Month Essay Contest

WEST PALM BEACH — In preparation for Haitian Heritage Month (HHM) in May, the School District of Palm Beach County welcomes entries for its annual HHM essay contest to commemorate the valuable history and contributions of the Haitian community in Palm Beach County.

High School students are invited to participate by writing a 600-700 word essay on this year’s theme “As a young immigrant student, leaving high school, what would you do if you were financially set?” The deadline for entries is Tuesday, April 17.

A committee of teachers and administrators will judge the essays based on a writing rubric to include content, originality, spelling, and grammar. Essay contest winners will be notified the second week in May and will attend the School Board Meeting on Wednesday, May 9, at 5 p.m. to accept the School Board Proclamation for HHM along with their prizes and certificates. The winners will also participate in a panel presentation at one of the Palm Beach County libraries.

Three prizes will be awarded:

• First Place: First Prize Certificate and $250
• Second Place: Second Prize Certificate and $150
• Third Place: Third Prize Certificate and $100


• Essay must be: 600-700 words

• Entries must be typed in Microsoft Word and e-mailed to Bito David,, no later than 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17.

• The first page of each entry must include the Entry Form Information below.

• Entries must use 12-point font Times New Roman, and double spaced.

• Submissions are final. Essays will be scored by a committee comprised of school teachers and administrators. Essays remain the property of the committee and will not be returned to their authors. Publication of the students’ essays will only be used for the promotion of the actual contest.

• Winners will be announced during the second week of May 2018.

• Winners will be invited to present their essay at a County’s Library Event as part an activity celebrating Haitian Heritage Month.
