Gove Elementary School earns awards

BELLE GLADE — Gove Elementary School was selected for the 2018 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School, District Sustainability or Postsecondary Sustainability Award.

Gove Elementary School has diligently worked with its staff, community and local partners for the last five years to accumulate grants and recognition to bring hands-on academic and conservation strategies for the students to be productive, caring community citizens.

Special to The Sun/GES
Green Team members Ellen Smith, Shelly Miller, Gayle Zavala, Bridget Lutz, Gove’s extraordinaire volunteer, Florencio Zavala, and school Principal Kim Thomasson.

It has been another “Glowing Green Year at Gove Elementary!” The recognition from the State and National Green Ribbon Department of Education, plus Palm Beach County Green School of Excellence, were the highlights, but the Green Team members did not stop there.

These programs provided the inspiration to continue their efforts to be “green to the core” by motivating the Glades students to discover their roots through the Everglades Foundation curriculum and continue what they learned by teaming with the local high schools to start a biannual “green market.”

Through these efforts, the school received another grant plus recognition from the Everglades Foundation as a 2018 Gold Level Everglades Champion School. It has been a team effort with loads of work, but it was worth it for our students, families, school and community!

Kudos to the Green Team members, Ellen Smith, Shelly Miller, Gayle Zavala, Bridget Lutz and our volunteer extraordinaire, Florencio Zavala, for doing such a great job! The Green Team members and school Principal Kim Thomasson will be attending the awards ceremony on Sept. 19, from 1 to 7 p.m. at the U.S. Department of Commerce and on Capitol Hill
