Rotary Club holds annual awards and installation

PAHOKEE — The Pahokee Rotary Club held its annual awards and installation gathering on Thursday, June 28, at the First United Methodist Church in Pahokee.

Pahokee Rotary Club President Elizabeth Cayson shared with the club all of the major accomplishments for the past year, including receiving the Rotary District 6930 Vocational Award. Some of the year’s accomplishments included sending four Pahokee High School students tothe Rotary Youth Leadership Awards’ (RYLA) youth camp, provided two scholarships to seniors at Pahokee High School, hosted the annual Community Fishing Tournament; and, financial contributions were made to the Florida Community Health Centers Community Baby Shower event, Alzheimer’s Research, Rotary Foundation and a joint Global Project in Mexico.

President Elizabeth Cayson is employed by the Children’s Services Council of PBC, and had recently returned from attending the Rotary International Convention in Toronto, Ontario, in time to participate in Rotary’s Awards Ceremony and Installation. She expressed her sincere support to the club members and officers, for their unwavering support during her tenure as club president.

The Rotary Club recognized several Rotary members and community leaders for their outstanding support provided to the club. The following awards were presented: Corey Miller, dedicated service for club fundraising efforts; Mike Garcia, dedicated service for his commitment and dedication to the Community Fishing Tournament; and Kay Brand, Rotary International Presidential Challenge Tree of Life award. Rotarian of the Year award, which is the highest award given by Rotary Clubs, was presented to Capt. Ed Luty. In addition, the Rotary Club recognized key community leaders for their ongoing support. The Community Service awards were presented to Enid Cochran from Pahokee High School for her support with RYLA; Mayor Melissa McKinlay, Community Service Award, for her commitment to Pahokee during hurricane season; and Bridges at Pahokee for their ongoing support to Rotary community projects. Assistant District Governor/Rotarian Barnie Walker presided over the installation of officers for the following members who will serve as incoming officers for the coming year 2018-2019: Kay Brand as club president, Donia Roberts as vice president, Mike Garcia as treasurer, Capt. Ed Luty as secretary, and Liz Cayson as past president. After installation of officers was performed, President Kay Brand presented Rotarian Elizabeth Cayson with the President’s Award for her service as Rotary Club president.
