A 19-year-old man who had been in the hospital for nearly a week after being involved in a serious wreck outside of Belle Glade, finally succumbed to his injuries, reported the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO).
The young man, Bailey James Reynolds, of Loxahatchee, was driving one of two vehicles involved in a serious crash on State Road 80 last Thursday, Oct. 1. The incident happened at approximately 8:55 a.m.
According to PBSO’s Vehicle Homicides Investigations unit, Reynolds was driving westbound on State Road 80 in a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta when another vehicle, a 2013 Chevy 1500 truck driven by Chen-Jian Hu, 66, of Clewiston, darted out in front of him, traveling northbound in an attempt to cross both eastbound and westbound lanes of State Road 80 from a gravel access road used to travel from farm field to farm field.
Reynolds was unable to avoid the crash, and struck Hu’s vehicle in a violent collision. The force of the impact caused Hu’s vehicle to turn counterclockwise, coming to a final rest facing south in a ditch on the north side of the road. Reynold’s vehicle continued traveling west before running off the road and into the same ditch.
Both drivers were Traumahawked to St. Mary’s Hospital in West Palm Beach for treatment, although Hu suffered only minor injuries from the collision. According to the report, Reynolds was not wearing a seatbelt at the time. A passenger in Reynold’s vehicle is believed to have suffered no injuries, and was wearing a seatbelt.
Although Reynolds was taken to the hospital immediately after the wreck, the young man would not be pronounced deceased until five days later, on Oct. 6, at 10:06 a.m.
The sheriff’s office has not said if charges in the case are pending.
