The incident happened on Tuesday, September 22, at the mall located in Wellington, according to a report released by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responding to the scene spoke to a 73-year-old woman who had narrowly escaped being run over in her own vehicle. The woman described a dangerous scene: a man later identified as
Leon Nugent, of Belle Glade, who turned 18 this month, allegedly approached the woman asking for change for the bus. The woman said she could not reach into her purse for change because she just got her nails done, and walked toward her car, a 2002 black Mercedes sedan.
“As she opened the door and sat in the car (she did not close her door), someone from behind hit her in the back of the head and dragged her forcefully from the interior driver’s side of the vehicle,” writes Det. Frenc in his report.
The man then got inside the vehicle and fled through the parking lot, nearly running the woman over as he backed out of the parking spot. The entire scene was captured on surveillance cameras that showed the man approaching the woman, then pulling her out forcibly from the car. Deputies spotted the vehicle matching the description near the intersection of Forest Hill Blvd. and Jog Road. The vehicle weaved in and out of traffic and accelerated until reaching Haverhill Road, where he crashed the car into a pole at a nearby CVS.
The man tried to run but deputies and K9 units closed in on him and apprehended him at the CVS. He was transported to the hospital for treatment and then jailed on charges of carjacking, battery on a person over 65, and resisting arrest without violence.
He is being held at the Main Detention Center in West Palm Beach under no bond.
