A man was struck and killed by a car in Belle Glade this week, reports the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
The accident happened shortly after 10 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2, in the 1200 block of South Main Street.
That’s when James Richard Thornton, 51, a homeless man, walked into the path of an oncoming car and lost his life, according to traffic homicide investigators.
It is uncertain why Mr. Thornton failed to see the approaching vehicle, a 2010 Ford SUV driven by South Bay resident Ronald Graham, 45.
Mr. Graham was heading southbound on Main Street when the accident occurred.
Mr. Thornton was walking on the west side of the road, perhaps attempting to cross the road, when he was struck by the front side of the vehicle, his body coming to rest on the west side of the roadway against the curb.
Arriving rescue crews were unable to help Mr. Thornton, who suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of the SUV and his passenger suffered no injuries and are believed to have been wearing their seatbelts at the time.
