Deputies target animal confinement

A 34-year-old Belle Glade woman was arrested recently on seven counts of unlawful confinement after deputies reported seeing animals kept in deplorable conditions in her home.

Deputies were first notified about allegations the woman had dead animals inside her trailer home. When they responded on June 8, the woman had a warrant issued in her name on prior charges of failure to appear for retail theft.

With warrant in hand, the deputies met with the suspect, Jamariah Yvatte Bouie, who was outside of her home with dogs. The woman was arrested and handcuffed while deputies conducted a quick inspection of the area, failing to find decomposition odors or traces outside of the home.

The woman would not allow the deputies inside the home and explained that there were no other animals inside. Deputies could smell the strong odor of feces and knocked on the door to find out whether other animals were inside. Only a dog underneath the house barked.

But in front of the house dogs inside cages had little food or water.

“I could see several dogs, two of which were in a medium-sized cage with a small bowl that had a couple of drops of dirty water in it,” wrote the detective assigned to the case. “Ms. Bouie had just finished telling me that all her animals were fed and had water. She volunteered that information to me when we arrived on scene and I told her I was there for another reason.”

The small cage was on top of a pallet, with the dogs standing on the wire floor of the cage. The cage was covered by a comforter.

This was enough for deputies to arrest the woman on the confinement charges. Bouie will now be facing the unlawful confinement charges in court.
