Former Clewiston resident latest fatality on deadly U.S. 27 stretch

A 27-year-old former Clewiston man died on Friday after his car veered into a canal just south of South Bay in Palm Beach County, reports the Florida Highway Patrol.

It is the second deadly accident to occur within the area in less than one week.

The accident happened at approximately 7:41 p.m., May 29, near mile marker 59 on U.S. 27.

According to information released by FHP, the man, David Holligan Jr., was making his way north on U.S. 27 when, for reasons that remain unknown, he lost control of his vehicle and veered to the left.

The move caused the car, a 2013 Kia Optima, to travel across the median, entering the southbound lanes, and plunging into a canal on the west shoulder.

The car was completely submerged in the canal when rescue workers arrived to the scene. The man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The accident is the second deadly accident to occur south of South Bay this week.

Just five days earlier, three other men from the Glades drove into a canal just seven miles south of Friday night’s accident.

All three men, Hershie Lee Hobbs Jr., 34, and Alton Hart, 30, both of Pahokee, and a third passenger, Lavoris Lenard Hall, 29, of Belle Glade, died when their 1998 Mercury sedan, heading north at the time, also veered left and crossed into the median.

The car then traveled across the northbound lanes, striking a guardrail and overturning into the canal.

A patrolling FHP trooper spotted the fresh tire tracks on the road and damage on the guardrail.

Troopers do not yet know when exactly that accident happened.
