To honor the memory of the twin girls who lost their lives in a house fire in May, Pahokee Middle School is raising money for college scholarships to be awarded to deserving students in their names.
Cassandra and Catherine Colon died tragically when their home caught fire in Pahokee on May 19. The girls were eighth grade students at Pahokee Middle School.
Administrators, students and staff at Pahokee Middle hope to honor their memory by creating a scholarship in their names. The scholarship would be awarded to deserving students beginning in 2019 — the year Cassandra and Catherine would have graduated.
“Cassandra and Catherine both understood the importance of education and dreamed of going to college,” said Pahokee Middle School Principal Michael Aronson. “These scholarships are one way to honor their memories.”
The scholarship fund received a commitment last week from Take Stock in Children Palm Beach County, which will contribute matching funds and provide mentors to scholarship recipients.
Take Stock said it will contribute $2,000 for every $2,000 raised by the middle school, and will present a two-year Florida Prepaid scholarship through its partnership with the Florida Prepaid Foundation.
The prepaid scholarship will pay for two years tuition at a two-year state college or four-year public university.
A mentor and college readiness coach will also be provided by Take Stock to the scholarship recipients, who will be chosen in their junior year of high school. The mentor and coach will be with the student during his senior year of high school to prepare them for the changes they can expect during their coming years at college.
“Take Stock in Children understands that it takes a village and we are committed to changing one community at a time, one family at a time, one young person at a time,” said Nancy Stellway, Executive Director for Take Stock in Children Palm Beach County. “The promise of a college scholarship and a better life can guide a child in the right direction and we are honored to partner with Pahokee Middle School in memory of Cassandra and Catherine.”
Principal Aronson is also working with Buffalo Wild Wings in Wellington on a scholarship fundraising event, in which 10 percent of the restaurant’s proceeds will be donated to the scholarship fund. The date for the fundraiser has not yet been determined.
Anyone interested in donating to the scholarship fund should contact Pahokee Middle School at 561-924-6500. Donations can also be mailed to the school at 850 Larrimore Road, Pahokee, FL, 33476.
