Palm Beach County School District Weekly Update

West Tech Registration: After sitting empty for nearly 20 years, West Technical Education Center (West Tech) is accepting students for the 2017-2018 school year. Students can attend their home school for their core high school classes, and then study construction or mechatronics at West Tech. Applications are being accepted now. Adults or students 16 or older who are not enrolled in a K-12 program can also take GED®, ESOL and workforce development classes. Here is more information with links to the applications:

Adaptive Technology: Kids spend plenty of time over the summer on electronics. We’re encouraging parents to get them using adaptive technology for at least 45 minutes a week over the summer to keep their learning gains up and their brain focused. I-Ready is available for students K-5 for math and reading lessons. Khan Academy offers lessons in math, computer programming, science, history, art history, economics for students K-12. It also offers PSAT prep. Students should have access to these programs in their portal by using their student IDs and log in credentials. For more on Khan, click here:

New Buses: The pennies are already at work and new buses have arrived! We will have a few of the new buses on display for tour on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. before this week’s board meeting. Reminder too, that we’re still hiring bus drivers through the summer for the school year.

Glades Central High School Valedictorian: If you haven’t met her, Perla Cervantes is an inspiration. She is the first person in her family to ever ATTEND high school and she graduated with a 4.0 GPA and a 6.0 HPA to earn the top spot of the school’s Class of 2017. She plans to study linguistics and languages. She speaks English and Spanish but is also studying Mandarin, Chinese, Korean and Japanese. She is a very impressive young lady with a great head on her shoulders.
