BELLE GLADE – After nearly two decades of sitting empty, West Technical Education Center, fondly known as West Tech, is reopening its doors.
Career-focused academy programs in Construction and Mechatronics will be offered to public, charter and private school students entering grades 9, 10, and 11 for the 2017-2018 school year. The Construction Academy and the Mechatronics Academy are four-year programs that require students to attend West Tech for 100 minutes each day. Students will attend their home school for all core classes and will be able to participate in co- and extra-curricular activities at their home school.
Academy classes provide project-based, hands-on training that lead to industry recognized certifications such as NCCER Core, NCCER Carpentry, RECG Robotics, and MSSC Certified Production Technician.
Students must have a 2.0 or higher grade point average and satisfactory behavior to be considered for an Academy program. Algebra One is recommended but not required. Additional Academy offerings will be added for the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 school years.
Adults and students 16 or older that are officially withdrawn from K-12 school can attend West Tech for GED, ESOL, and workforce development classes. The current workforce development classes are Welding, Electrical, HVAC, and Construction.
Adult students attend two to four nights per week depending on the program(s) in which enrolled. The cost is $30 per term; however, fee waivers are available as well as transportation assistance. Earning a State of Florida High School Diploma and acquiring professional occupational skills opens the door to new opportunities and pathways in your life!
To enroll in one of the programs offered at West Technical Education Center, stop by Monday – Thursday between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. or for additional information call 912-829-4620.
