Big Lake Athlete of the Week: Anthony McPhee

BELLE GLADE — Glades Day junior quarterback Anthony McPhee is this week’s Big Lake Athlete of the Week for his performance against the Jupiter Christian Eagles.

McPhee and the Glades Day Gators routed the Eagles 43-7 in their game on Oct. 5, bringing them to 4-3 this year. Glades Day had a total of 200 yards on offense, with 81 yards coming from passing and 119 coming on the ground. The Gators put up six touchdowns against the Eagles, and McPhee had a hand in four of those scoring plays.

McPhee got the ball rolling in the first quarter with a 21-yard touchdown run, then followed that up with another touchdown run. McPhee was also able to hit freshman wide receiver Jacob Camacho for a 33-yard touchdown pass before the first quarter ended. On that play, McPhee took the snap from shotgun, rolled out right, stepped up and launched a high arcing ball that hit Camacho in stride for an easy score. After a two-point conversion, the Gators had a lead of 22-0 before the second quarter.

McPhee completed six of his nine passes, with two of them going for touchdowns. His longest completion against Jupiter Christian was 39 yards. He rushed for 47 yards on six attempts for another two touchdowns.

After opening the season 1-2, the Gators have been able to win three out of their last four, with their only loss being a 22-21 heartbreaker to the rival Moore Haven Terriers. And Glades Day still had a shot to come away with the victory in that game, as the Gator offense was able to get the team into field goal range in the final minutes. Unfortunately, the kick attempt missed and the Terriers were able to leave Belle Glade with a victory.

McPhee has shown up in clutch moments all season for the Gators this year. After opening 1-2, the Gators needed a win to start moving the team in a positive direction and start stacking wins. Against St. Andrew’s on Sept. 14, McPhee was able put up 257 yards and two touchdowns through the air. Camacho was another favorite target in that game, with 93 of those 257 passing yards going to him. Glades Day would go on to win that game 32-6.

The Gators will need McPhee to continue to putting impressive numbers like that so they can win the last three regular-season games.
