The Pahokee Blue Devils scored late in the fourth quarter to secure a 35-28 win over the Palm Beach Gardens Gators on Oct 6. Next the Blue Devils will play a homecoming game against West Park Prep this Friday Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.
Pahokee coach Orson Walkes and his Blue Devils are now 4-1 after their victory over Palm Beach Gardens. Thus far in the season Pahokee has relied on their dominant defense, but it was the offense that ultimately pulled through and won the game against the Gators.
“We had close to 532 yards of offense,” explained Walkes, “And thank god, because our defense did give up more points than we usually do. We’ll take it.”
Pahokee running back junior Jateri Washington had 176 yards and three touchdowns on the night, while junior Lavonski Williams had 90 yards and a touchdown for himself as well.
Late in the forth quarter the game was tied 28-28 with the Blue Devils facing a 4th and 23 from the Gators 28 yard line. With the game on the line, Pahokee quarterback Deonte Nelson completed a beautiful 25-yard pass to Tyler Gilbert which set up a Jateri Washington 3-yard touchdown run that put the Blue Devils on top 35-28 with only 1:47 remaining in the game.
“I thought the fourth and 23 play was a good call,” said Walkes, “predominantly we were running the ball all game. It was a run formation with only two receiving options, so the Gators were playing the run. Great call by coach Johnson and excellent execution by Mr. Nelson and Mr. Gilbert. Palm Beach Gardens played their butt off. They had to play two games that week, so hats off to them. I have to give credit to them for playing that tough after playing a game only two days prior. They played hard, we just won.”
The Blue Devils are now preparing to host their homecoming game against West Park Prep this Friday Oct. 13.
“West Park is a first year program,” said Walkes, “I believe they only have six games this year. I’ve heard that they lost a player down there in a shooting this year, so my heart goes out to them. Football is important, but it takes a backseat to life.”
