PAHOKEE — The Pahokee High School Blue Devils basketball team lost to the Okeechobee Brahmans 55-35 in their game on Jan. 12.
It’s the second time this season the Brahmans have bested the Blue Devils, Okeechobee won the first match-up 71-64 back on Dec. 11.
In that game, the OHS Brahmans jumped out to an early lead, scoring 29 points in the first quarter while only allowing the Blue Devils two.
Pahokee was able to rally back into the game with an impressive second and third quarter, but Okeechobee was able to hold on to secure the victory.
The first quarter of the Jan. 12 game started much better for Pahokee as the Blue Devils took advantage of a couple of early Brahman missed shots to jump out to a 15-13 lead, but all that changed once the second quarter started.
Okeechobee overcame its slow start and began dominating the game, both offensively and defensively. OHS junior J-quan Ferrol put together a string of back-to-back shots and lay-ups that set the Blue Devils defense back on their heels.
By the end of the second quarter, the Brahmans had turned a 15-13 deficit into a 28-19 lead, only allowing the Blue Devils four points during their 15-point run. And despite a small rally by Pahokee in the fourth quarter, the second half was all Okeechobee.
Ultimately, the Brahmans’ experience and athleticism was too much for the Blue Devils to overcome, despite the more evenly matched first quarter.
The loss brings the Blue Devils to an 0-10 record on the season.
Next they’ll face the Seminole Ridge Hawks, who come into the game with a 2-13 record.
Pahokee narrowly lost to Seminole Ridge earlier in the season, 36-21. The Blue Devil offense just couldn’t get rolling in that first match-up, putting up only six points in the second half.
Now with more experience under their belts, the Blue Devils will attempt to exact some revenge on the Hawks at 7 p.m. on Jan. 18 at Pahokee High School.
