BELLE GLADE – The Glades Central Raiders host the Wildcats of Royal Palm Beach to start the 2016 high school football season on Friday night.
Glades Central tied Lake Worth in the preseason game last Friday 13-13. A last second touchdown pass from quarterback James Blackman to Quantino Allen salvaged a tie for the Raiders in the exhibition. Blackman had two touchdown passes in the game. Allen also had a blocked punt for Glades Central.
Last year the Raiders defeated the Wildcats 34-20. The Raiders, coached by Rick Casko, finished (9-3) last year. They won District 4A-7 and advanced to the regional finals where they lost to eventual state champion, Booker T. Washington, 35-21.
Casko enters his third year at the helm with a career record of (19-6) for the Raiders. The Wildcats are coached by former Raiders Coach Willie Bueno and finished (6-6) a year ago.
Other district opponents for the Raiders this year include arch rival Clewiston, Somerset Academy and University.
The Raiders roster includes 25 seniors this year led by highly recruited QB James Blackman. The other seniors include Marcos Manrique, Markevious Blackmon, Rodrick Martin, Cory Amilcar, Rodney Porter Jr., Siurpry Rinvil, Demetruis Martin, Quantino Allen, Thuran Smith, Wisly Edouard, Cornelius White, Ja’shawne Browne, Sheldom Miles, Ruben Joseph, Kevin Bell, Mark Butts, Jean Pierre Noel, Roselvard Valens, Endy Classe, Tremain Carrigan, Adrian Lockhart and Lexinord Esteven.
Lake Worth put up a strong defensive effort against the Raiders last week led by Miami Hurricane recruit, defensive lineman, Johnathan Garvin. The Trojans had six sacks in the game.
The Raiders hope to protect the QB better this game and open up their offense. Royal Palm Beach, which plays in District 7A-13, lost most of their playmakers to graduation last year. Adarius Dent figures to be one of the Wildcats top offensive threats Friday.
The game begins at 7 p.m. at Glades Central High School.
