BELLE GLADE – Palm Beach Lakes stunned Glades Central last Friday, Sept 2, 16-13. The Rams built an early 13-0 lead and then held off the Raiders comeback bid.
It was a mistake filled game with penalties, turnovers and missed scoring opportunities for the Raiders (1-1). The two teams combined for 250 yards in penalties.
Jalen Wright broke loose for a 53-yard touchdown run and Jordan Canady added an eight yard touchdown run for the Rams in the first quarter. A field goal by David Marcellus proved to be the winning score for the Rams.
The Raiders responded with a 50-yard touchdown run by DeJuan Miller in the first half. The other Glades Central score came on a freak play as Nicolas Pierre scooped up a loose ball after a tight end Siurpy Rinvil caught a long pass but fumbled the ball at the Rams 40. Pierre ran the rest of the way to pull the Raiders to within three points, 16-13 with three minutes to go in the game.
This week the Raiders will look for better results against American Heritage Delray Beach. The Stallions coached by Keith Hindsley are off to an 0-2 start. They opened the season with a 50-17 loss at Naples and then travelled to Washington, D.C., last Friday, Sept. 2, where they lost to St. Johns High 42-9.
The Stallion defense gave up 466 rushing yards to Naples. American Heritage was 10-3 last year which included a 35-19 victory at home over Glades Central. The Raiders will try to earn revenge this year at their stadium against the 3A-7 Stallions.
Top threats for the Stallions include 6’4″ quarterback Cam Smith and West Virginia Mountaineer recruit Alec Sinkfield. Other players to watch include running back Luis Gonzales and wide receiver Jalen Kinder.
The game is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. at Effie C. Grear Field in Belle Glade. There is a charge for parking and admission.
