BELLE GLADE – It was a disappointing start to the season for Glades Day Friday, Aug. 26, as they fell to Benjamin 43-41 in week one. Benjamin had been coming off a tough season, 1-9, while Glades Day hoped to improve from a subpar, for them, 3-7 record.
The Panthers didn’t play last week so this was the opening game of the season for them. They are coached by Troy Harrison and play in the South Eastern Football Conference. Last season they finished 7-3 and lost in the division semifinal playoff game.
Quarterback Jordan Schulefand returns for his senior year. He put up big numbers as a junior with 2,184 yards passing, 23 touchdowns and a high Quarterback rating of 107.9.
He lost most of his top targets to graduation but does return James Pierson who caught 12 passes for 383 yards. Pierson is also the team’s most experienced running back from last year.
The Panther defense was led by Brett Elpert who had 103 tackles last year which include 8.5 tackles for loss.
Quarterback Alex Mineo did a nice job running the offense for the Gators last week, which was obvious from the 41 points they put on the scoreboard despite a torrential rain shower. Markens Pierre had a couple of short touchdown runs, broke loose for several long gains at tailback and also played a solid game at linebacker. Antarus Johnson added a blocked extra point and had several tackles in the secondary.
Glades Day will have to play better on defense and limit big plays on special teams in order to be successful.
The kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. There is a charge for admission and parking.
