Glades Day was dominant on defense Friday, Sept. 16 as they walloped overmatched Miami Country Day 42-0.
The Gators held the Spartans to 14 total yards.
The Gators equaled last year’s win total as they improved to (3-1) while Miami Country Day fell to (0-4).
The offense was plenty good for the Gators with 358 total yards with 274 yards on the ground.
It was a running back by committee approach Friday as Markens Pierre had 94 yards and three touchdowns, Cross Onega 83 yards and a touchdown and Rhett Lohmann 46 yards. Quarterback Alex Mineo completed (4-7) passes for 50 yards and two touchdowns to Jorge Acosta and AJ Johnson. Backup quarterback Lane Collins was (4-4) for 34 yards.
Anthony McPhee led the receivers with 34 yards. Lohmann was a perfect 6-6 on extra points.
This week the Gators have another long road trip as they travel to Tavernier to take on the Coral Shores Canes. The Canes (2-1) are coached by Ed Holly. So far this year they have defeated Marathon 38-6 in a game cut short by lightning, defeated Miami Country Day 34-0, and lost to King’s Academy 35-0. They play in the Southeastern Football Conference South Division.
They remarkably had a very similar effort against Miami Country Day as Glades Day did. They rushed for 300 yards on offense and on defense held the Spartans to just one first down.
Tanaris Walker ran for 133 yards in the victory over Miami Country Day. Aiden Hawkins, Abran Mendoza and Anthony Cosme all have rushing touchdowns this year. The Canes quarterback is sophomore Juan Pablo Aborrezco. The defense is led by Bryce Wheaton, Ryan Bannerot, Blye Hofstetter and Aiden Hawkins.
The Canes Stadium is located at 89901 Old Highway in Tavernier. The kickoff Friday, Sept. 23, is scheduled for 7 p.m. There will be a charge for both admission and parking.
