BELLE GLADE – Glades Day lost a heart breaker to Coral Shores Tavernier Friday, Oct. 28, in the Southeastern North Football Conference, as they gave up 20 unanswered points after they built a 14-0 lead in the second quarter.
The teams had battled earlier in the season at the same venue to a 13-12 Hurricanes victory.
Glades Day finished the season at (5-4). Coral Shores advances to the second round of the conference playoffs Friday, Nov. 4, against unbeaten Kings Academy (9-0).
The Gators took the first quarter lead on a six yard touchdown pass from quarterback Alex Mineo to senior AJ Johnson. They made it 14-0 in the second when Markens Pierre scored on a 15 yard touchdown run.
Coral Shores responded with a 16 yard touchdown run by Aiden Hawkins before halftime to cut the Gators lead to 14-7 at the break.
The score stayed that way until the fourth quarter, until the Hurricanes rallied with 13 unanswered points. Ryan Bannerot ran for an 11 yard touchown, and added a three yard touchdown run in the final minutes.
Sean Walters was (2-3) on extra points for Coral Shores while Rett Lohmann was (2-2) on conversion attempts for Glades Day.
Glades Day rushed for 118 yards and threw for 90 yards in the game. Coral Shores ran for 221 yards but threw for only 13 yards in the contest. The Hurricanes had a decided 14 minute advantage in time of possession.
Coral Shores had two turnovers while Glades Day had one turnover.
For the Gators Pierre ran for 70 yards on 16 carries and Cross Onega 27 yards on three carries in their final high school game for the Gators. Alex Mineo completed (7-18) passes for 90 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Jorge Acosta caught two passes for 35 yards, Johnson two balls for 24 yards and Christian Ellison two receptions for 19 yards for Glades Day. He added an interception on defense.
Hawkins ran for 150 yards on 24 carries for the Hurricanes.
