BELLE GLADE — Markens Pierre erupted for 243 yards on the ground last week and Glades Day had 318 yards rushing as a team as they defeated Pine Crest School 28-21 on Friday, Sept. 2, in Belle Glade.
Alex Mineo had a solid game at quarterback for the Gators as he threw for 66 yards and a touchdown. Pierre’s 10 yard touchdown late in the game was the winning score for the Gators (1-1).
The Gators survived an outstanding effort from Pine Crest quarterback Jordan Schulefand who accounted for 367 total yards, 201 yards rushing and 166 passing. He also threw a touchdown pass to Bailey Finkelberg and also ran for two touchdowns. Finkelberg had 112 yards in receptions. Rett Lohman had an interception for Glades Day.
Glades Day also turned the ball over three times. Pine Crest hurt themselves with 90 yards in penalties.
The Gators did a great job in time of possession as they had 21 first downs in the game.
Friday the Gators open up their Southeastern Football Conference schedule with a home game against Florida Christian. The Patriots are off to a slow start at 0-2. They lost to Ransom Everglades 45-12 and to LaSalle 42-21. The Patriots defense gave up five touchdown passes thrown by Gerald Williams last week.
The Patriots posted a roster of only 19 players this year led by quarterback Cory Del Prado who threw for 708 yards as a backup last season. Coach Chris Rivera lost a lot of seniors from last year’s squad which finished last in the conference at 2-9.
This weeks home game will be Thursday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. instead of being on Friday due to Jewish holiday. There is a charge for admission and parking.
