Glades Sports in Brief

• Pahokee boys’ soccer defeated Glades Day on Dec. 14, 4-2. The Blue Devils lost to American Heritage 4-0 on Dec. 16. The Pahokee boys may have lost to Frostproof in high school basketball Dec. 16 but they still received several strong performances.

Kannard Smith had 15 points, three steals and four assists. Lonkevious McFadden had a solid game with four points, four rebounds, three blocks and two assists. Zatavian Morgan and Thomas Moore both grabbed seven rebounds for the Blue Devils. Pahokee travels to Glades Central for boys’ basketball on New Year’s Eve, varsity trip is 6:30 p.m. Pahokee boys’ soccer tied Palm Beach Central 2-2 on Dec. 19. Gustavo Medrano and Fabian Baltazar had one goal each.

• Glades Central got a 2-1 victory over arch-rival Clewiston in boys’ soccer on Dec. 21.

Raiders Coach Rose Pawlin said the team played the entire 80 minutes of the match and earned the win. It was also senior night and they honored all of the team’s seniors with roses, teddy bears, and custom made jerseys.

Pawlin also let the team coach themselves for the most part in this match. “I was simply a spectator. It was so fascinating that we even had cheerleaders who cheered us on to victory.”

The physical game nearly got out of hand for a moment as a brief tussle took place but a full-fledged fight was avoided when cooler heads prevailed.

Pawlin also got the feel of the ice bucket after the game as the players drenched her to celebrate the big victory.

• The Glades Day Gators boys’ basketball team defeated Sheridan Hills Christian 58-14 in a district match up at home on Dec. 16. The Gators were in control from the start as the built a 7-3 lead after the first quarter and led 22-9 at the half. Glades Day led 43-14 after the third quarter.
Coach Kurt Stahl said he decided to apply more half-court defensive pressure in the second half and the team executed well and built a solid lead.

Jacob Camacho continues to improve as an eighth grader as he led the Gators with 14 points. Freshman AJ McPhee and junior Jorge Acosta scored 11 points apiece. Glades Day is now (2-2 in districts and 3-6 overall).

The Gators will compete in the Jupiter Christian Christmas Tournament starting Dec. 28 through Dec. 30. Glades Day opened the tournament on Wednesday, Dec. 28, when they took on Dreyfoos School of the Arts at 3 pm.

• The Glades Central boys’ basketball team will compete in the D-Hop basketball tournament at Palm Beach Lakes High School starting Dec. 27 through Dec. 29.
