Glades Sports News in Brief

• The Glades Central boys’ basketball team has gotten off to a slow start this year. The boys lost to Lincoln Park Academy in a district contest in Fort Pierce on Friday, Jan. 6, 45-44. They also fell to Park Vista in a tight battle 43-40 on Jan. 3.

Trent Frazier scored 23 points last Tuesday, Jan. 10, to lead Wellington to a 71-36 defeat of the Raiders in Wellington. Glades Central is currently (2-6) on the season.

• The Glades Day girls’ soccer team continues to improve as they defeated Glades Central 4-1 on Jan. 9 and tied Okeechobee 1-1 on Jan. 10.

Jade Echols had three goals and Lauren Nichols scored a goal in the victory over the Lady Raiders. Caroline Stein added two assists.

The Lady Gators fought hard with Okeechobee and held a lead until the 72nd minute of play. Goal keeper Jaylin Smith had a strong match with many great saves, especially in the second half, when Okeechobee out shot Glades Day 12-4. Echols scored the Gator goal in the first half on a corner kick.

• The Glades Day boys’ soccer team defeated Lake Worth Christian 3-2 on Jan. 10. Rett Lohmann had two goals which included one on a penalty kick. Alex Costa scored the other goal on an assist from Lohmann.

Goal keeper JJ Hernandez made some great saves. Fullbacks Cross Onega and Maury Castaneda also played well on defense. It was the Gators senior night.

• Glades Day football will return to District play next year in the Florida High School Athletic Association.

Five Gator football players competed in the Palm Beach County All-Star game held on Jan. 14 at John I. Leonard High School. Markens Pierre, Christian Ellison, AJ Johnson, Casey Connell and Colby Connell represented Glades Day in the game.

• Glades Day boys basketball had a rough time at Westlake Prep School on Jan. 9, 80-36. Westlake jumped out to a 21-4 lead after the first quarter and led 36-19 at halftime. Glades Day fell to (4-9) while Westlake improved to (7-5).

Coach Kurt Stahl said his team got off to a slow start but played hard in the second quarter. They cut a 17 point lead to seven, 24-17, before a late run by Westlake.

Freshman AJ McPhee had 12 points and Eric Leon added 10 points. Glades Day is (2-4) in district play.
