PAHOKEE – Pahokee showed why they were ranked No. 4 in the Class 1A poll last Friday, Aug. 26, as they defeated Seminole Ridge 20-14 in a hard fought game in Loxahatchee.
The Blue Devils were led by Rodney McKay who scored on a 64 yard touchdown in the first quarter.
Quarterback T.J. Smith threw two touchdown passes to Adarius Dent in the second quarter to build a 20-7 halftime lead. The defense did the rest in the second half by holding off the Hawks with a goal line stand.
Coach Orson Walkes will hope for similar efforts this week as the Blue Devils host out of state opponent Wayne Hills, from New Jersey.
McKay ran for 123 yards and Smith threw for 177 yards to lead Pahokee. Zatavian Morgan also had 69 yards in receptions for the Blue Devils.
The Patriots finished (9-3) one year ago and lost in the State Championship Game.
Quarterback Brendan Devera threw for 1,453 yards last year and 21 touchdowns. He also rushed for 751 yards and six more touchdowns and averaged seven yards per rush. While the Patriots lost their top three wide receivers to graduation they do return two solid running backs and Luca Grave, who ran for 1,212 yards, 16 touchdowns and over eight yards per rush last year. Also back is running back Jacob Casale who ran for 440 yards, a rushing average of 6.2 yards per carry and three touchdowns last year.
The defense will be led by junior Jason Modik who had 58 tackles last year and Tom Homsi, who had 55 tackles and three Quarterback sacks last year.
Pahokee will hope to be spurred on by the ardent and supportive fans this week as they take on a virtual unknown out of state team.
Coach Walkes said his goal is to win a state title this year and Friday’s game should show if Pahokee is up to the task this year.
The game is played at Anquan Boldin Stadium and kickoff time is 7 p.m.
Coach Walkes said he was proud of the way his team played versus Seminole Ridge. “It was a good team win. The offense is explosive but we need to focus more and the defense is still working out personnel. We are looking forward to representing the state of Florida this weekend, it is an opportunity for us to display our talent,” he said.
