Pahokee Blue Devils win annual Muck Bowl

PAHOKEE – Pahokee scored on five of the team’s first six possession and held off a Glades Central rally to end an eight game losing streak in the Muck Bowl, 27-14, Friday, Nov. 4, in Pahokee.

The win improved the Blue Streaks record to (10-0). The Blue Devils host Newberry in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs Friday, Nov. 11.

The last time Pahokee won the Muck Bowl they were able to go on and capture the State Class 2B crown. The team hopes for similar results this year.

Quarterback Tyrone Smith had a strong game as he threw a first quarter touchdown pass to Tyron Arnett and also made several throws that set up other scores.

His pass to Arnett capped a 67 yard drive that gave the Blue Devils the lead and early momentum. Later in the quarter Smith hit Zatavian Morgan with a 33 yard pass to set up Rodney McKay’s 18 yard scoring run and a 14-0 lead.

Glades Central responded with a 39 yard touchdown pass from quarterback James Blackman to wide out Quantino Allen.

The Blue Devils held a comfortable 21-7 lead at the half when Smith’s 46 yard completion to Adarius Dent led to a one yard scoring run by Jim Travis Gray.

Pahokee finished off the scoring with two field goals from Ezekiel Hernandez in the second half. Hernandez connected on kicks of 27 and 36 yards.

Glades Central cut the lead to 27-14 in the fourth after a successful fake punt led to a three yard touchdown run by Demetrius Martin.

The Newberry Panthers (8-1) will pose a threat to Pahokee on Friday, Nov. 11. The Panthers only loss was to District 1A-7 champion Trenton 19-18. They are coached by Richard Vester. The Panthers have defeated Sante Fe 22-6, Gainesville Eastside 35-7, Union County 40-22, Williston 30-14, Chiefland 42-0, Branford 28-0, Dixie County 24-20, and Taylor County 60-22.

The Panthers are led by quarterback David Robison who has rushed for 334 yards and nine touchdowns and thrown only 35 passes, but four of them were for touchdowns. Running back Jacquez Jernigan has rushed for 1,230 yards and 16 scores and the Panthers have run for over 2,700 yards as a team. Tramell Smith has 447 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Cory Durden has caught 27 passes for 216 yards and three touchdowns. He has added three tackles for loss on defense. Garry Mitchell has 73 tackles, Chris Washington 71 tackles, Ja’len Parks 13 tackles for loss, and Trei Leonardo five interceptions to lead the Panthers defense.
